Aloha! I am Estelle, thanks for visiting! I discovered yoga at the age of 20. My first class was a Kundalini Yoga class in Eugene, Oregon through the community college. I loved it! Eventually, I changed schools to Oregon State University. While there I completed a Hatha Yoga class. I found the class to be very calming and it inspired me to continue my yoga practice. At this point, I was not super consistent, which I think many people can sympathize with. Even though health is wealth in many ways, we often neglect our health. When I eventually realized how much I really benefited from a regular practice, I decided to deepen my knowledge and pursue a yoga education, without the intention to become a teacher. However, when the opportunity to teach arose, I’d decided to do it and I am very glad I did. Sharing the practice of yoga is a true joy for me.
I was born with scoliosis, doctors have always said it’s a mild case, not severe. However, with consistent neck and back tension, reduced breathing capacity, and uneven shoulders it doesn’t feel mild to me. It was because of practicing yoga asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques) that I realized the tension in my neck and back was greatly reduced when I practiced regularly. Also, I go to the chiropractor and receive massages regularly to take proper care of myself. No one gets a guide book to the body and each body is different. I have learned through the years what is best for me. Consistent and regular yoga practice, massage, and chiropractic adjustments have been very beneficial for my body, mind, and spirit. My favorite type of yoga is Hatha Yoga, a focus on breathing and a little longer holds. My teacher training was on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii at Hawaiian Healing Yoga with Stacey Lanterman, in the fall of 2014. There were only 4 students, it was very hands-on and a thorough training. She is an excellent educator and a true gem of a person. I am thrilled that I choose to study with Stacey. There are so many teachers to choose from and it can be tough to pick one.
Additional training includes the wonderful opportunity of Yoga for Scoliosis with the infamous Elise Browning Miller. (Www.yogaforscoliosis.com) in Vancouver, Canada in fall 2015. She has tons of wisdom to share and it was great to learn from her. Also, it was so beneficial to be surrounded by other yogis who also have scoliosis and are interested in the incredible healing benefits of yoga.
